Mawgan Porth Cornwall June 2010

We got an early start in and thought we would drive all the way to Cornwall and aim for Mawgan Porth near Newquay. This was a bit ambitious and we ended up stopping off at Mortonhampstead in Devon and camping on our family's lawn for the night. The next morning we set off for a proper old fashioned campsite with a truly awful website -Marver Holiday Park. That would explain why this little gem of a campsite had pitches available, even though the one next door (Magic Cove) had been booked up for months. Marver had very basic loos and showers and a strange"70s swingers" style sauna complex with cobwebs everywhere - should have taken some pictures! A great little spot, 200 yds from the beach and shops/pubs.

View of Mawgan Porth beach - near Watergate Bay
Beautiful sunset on our first night there

Day on the beach at Mawgan Porth followed by a beer and tea at the Merry Moor Inn. Check out their webcam.

One day we caught the bus into Newquay. Mawgan Porth is halfway between there and Pdstow. It was pot luck the bus was going to Newquay. And it was a double decker so the views were great even though it was a bit hair raising.
Here's some pics taken in our fave Newquay bar - Belushi's.

Followed by a walk over to Fistral Beach before we headed back to our campsite.

Lleyn Peninsula May 4th - 9th 2010

Afer checking out the weather forecast we decided to head west to North Wales instead of east to Robin Hoods Bay. Hopefully we will make it over there sometime soon. We set out on bank holiday monday to our first stop at Caernarfon. Got a pitch at Cwm Cadnant Valley campsite about 10 mins walk from the castle. Not a bad spot. And the sun was shining too.

We went in to the town and had a look round. Had a few drinks and some food and here we are at the Black Boy Inn with a friendly local!

Then it was on to the marina where Gordon did some sunbathing!

The next day we moved on to Morfa Nefyn on the north coast of the peninsula. We stayed at Graeanfryn Farm campsite fro 2 nights. Gordon was very pleased with himself as he had managed to make a pasty and we heated it up in the remoska oven. Very good it tasted too. Well done.

The best thing about staying at Morfa Nefyn was being close to a fantastic beach and walk to the headland. It is owned by the National Trust. And there is a watering hole there called the Ty Coch Inn. With a fab view.

Gordon eating the most expensive ham salad sandwich ever - £2.50 for a tiny roll. He was incensed!

The view from the beer garden...

The next day (wednesday) the weather wasn't too clever, a bit drizzly. So we jumped on the bus to Pwllhelli. Not much there but OK to have a look round for a few hours.
Then it was on to Llanbedrog near Abersoch for the last 2 nights. Great view from Bolmynydd Campsite .

From the site you could walk up the lane to the headland, up to a view point then down to the beach via the tin man sculpture. It was about an hour and a half's walk. And well worth it.

Steep steps down to the beach on the cliff side - they were knee tremblers.

The next day we went over to Abersoch, it has a fantastic beach and we did some jumper sunbathing. On the way home we hopped of the bus at The Ship Inn and had the best meal of the week.

Back to the Lizard - September 09

First the camper failed it's MOT when we came back fom Cornwall in July, then after repairs the camshaft packed up so we ended up with a full engine rebuild and empty pockets. This all happened in the first week of September just before we were due to go back down to Henry's campsite at the Lizard and then stopover at the Forest of Dean on the way back.
The owner of Henry's had said to us that they usally got good weather in September so we thought we'd give it a go after the wet and windy July trip. Mum came up with the idea of us hiring a campervan and we managed to get one for 3 nights from Tavistock in Devon. Here's a view of Tavistock from Dartmoor and me picking up Ruby the camper...

Here we are at Henry's Campsite. Ruby looked very pretty but staying in a bay window T2 was a shock to the system as it was SO SMALL inside and not much fun for Gordon to drive. Looked good though...

A day at Kynance Cove...

Seeing as our week long holiday was cut short due to not having a campervan we couldn't go on to the Forest of Dean as planned. So we stopped off at Matt & Pip's then chose to go and have a look at Sidmouth. It was scorching hot and really busy. We went tot he TIC and they booked us into one of the last available rooms in Sidmouth. A christian hotel that felt more like a retirement home. All fun and games for us as usual! Sidmouth was very pretty, there was a great walk along a path cut out of the cliffs. We'd love to go back for a longer visit one day.

Cornwall 4 stops fortnight No 4: Harlyn Bay

Our last stop was St Merryn village next to Harlyn Bay, Padstow. It was a beautiful day when we arrived and Gordon and I went down to the beach for a few hours. How about this for a view...

It didn't take long for the weather to change for the worse - these pics are taken behind Rick Stein's chippy...

On the way back home we called in to Moretonhampstead and Meg tried on my wellies and hat. I think they suit her!
